Pakistan Film History

Posted Image

A Comprehensive website
Almost the whole history of Pakistani films, music information's and other milestones are now just a mouse click away!
Choose any year from the menu of "Film History" or from the right column and read an unique chapter of the history of Pakistani films since 1896..!

The film tally
According to my search on Pakistani films, a total number of 3.941 feature films have been released in 58 years between 1948 to 2005. (There could be a difference of few films). 207 feature films (154 Bengali and 53 Urdu films) which were produced in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) from 1956-71 are included in these figures. 138 double version films from 1989-2005 are also accounted as separated Urdu and Punjabi films in this tally.

Please note that:

All released Pakistani films are included in the tally despite the fact that some of films only were released in Sindh/Baluchistan or Punjab/NWFP circuits.

I'm only able to provide information's from Urdu and Punjabi films and need music and other film information's from other local languages from Pakistan. I will greatly appreciate if you can help me in this regard.

The Film Rankings
The film ranking is according to the film business and not the quality or standard of the particular film. The definitions are:

Superhit films:

Big profit

Hit films:

Profit

Average films:

No profit no loss

Flop films:

Loss

Some of flop or average films are very high qualities masterpieces and many of them are all time great musical memories. I have compiled most of these gems but need more information's on other films. See also Pakistan's Diamond jubilee, Platinum jubilee films and Pakistan Film History in Urdu.

Acknowledgment's
The main source to the film chronicle on this site is from some film directories compiled by Pakistan's famous film journalist and producer Mr. Yasin Goreeja (who died in December 2005). He did a great job for the film lovers to compile these records in his Urdu film directories.
Film posters are mainly copied from Mr. Omer Ali Khan's website www.thehotspotonline.com who also sells these posters in big sizes. Thanks to him too..!
I'm also grateful to all article writers on Pakistan Film Magazine.

About this site
Pakistan Film Magazine is now more than six years old continuously updated website and the largest source to Pakistani film related information's. It is an individual effort and a part time hobby for me. I'm a Pakistan born and Denmark based film fan. Pakistan Film Magazine was launched on May 3, 2000 which was a part of my personal website "Mazhar Iqbal's HomePage" (now mazhar.dk - inaugurated on October 24, 1999).

All information's on this site are according to my own knowledge and search and I'm totally responsible to all parts of this site.
If there is any mistake or misinformation - please inform me.

I think lollywood needs to be completely trashed and the current location of the studio's be used to train actors while the new ones be built in a clean city like Islamabad with some of the latest gear.

We also need to stop using call girls (reema, resham etc etc) as actresses in our movies, instead we should look for talent in the average Pakistani girl. Otherwise our industry will be going no where and we'll keep on helping the call girls business boom.

Tarap
Cast: Sheeba, Babrak Shah, Saud, Resham, Nadeem
Director: Sangeeta

This is a big-budget film (by local standards at least) shot in beautiful locations in both Dubai and Pakistan, according to its producer, Yaseen Malik.

Sangeeta has an impressive track record with Mutthi Bhar Chawal, Society Girl and Mohabbat Aur Mehngai that were considered the highlights of the ’70s era. Later, violating all codes of conduct and ethics, she resorted to formula films with masala, sex and gore. The amazing fact was that being a cultured actress and then a director who knew better, Sangeeta didn’t stick to social/romantic issues, thereby leading to her downfall.

With Tarap, she seems determined not to repeat past mistakes. “It is a family-oriented film with a strong social message. If it fails, I will be forced to reconsider making Punjabi action movies once again,” she said.

Nadeem plays the role of a father-in-law while Babrak Shah, who has secured a place for himself on the big screen after Ajab Gul’s Kyun Tum Se Itna Pyar Hai, is paired with Sheeba, a newcomer, proving that our film-makers strongly believe that the solution to the present crisis lies in introducing new talent.

The presence of Resham will certainly add some masala for the front benchers for the actress has lately developed a fondness for playing ***y roles. Let’s see what accolades the film bags for its producer and director.

Aik Gunahoon Ka Shehr
Cast: Ahad Butt, Sana, Saima Khan
Director: Saeed Ali Khan

When the team of Aik Gunahoon Ka Shehr approached the Pakistan Film Censor Board for a clearance certificate, objection was raised over the phrase Gunahoon Ka Shehr. Later the name was modified to Aik Gunahoon Ka Shehr. What exactly they aimed to achieve by this is still a mystery.

Secondly, the members of the respected censor board charged that the film has more than a healthy dose of steamy scenes and dialogues. Consequently, the film appeared before a full board who chopped off several scenes and dialogues which they considered ‘unnecessary’ and ‘irrelevant’, leaving no option but for the poor producer to reshoot them. Understandably annoyed, producer Saeed Iqbal presented his stand before the censor board members, explaining that the story of the film depicts the true picture of youth today who indulge in sex and crime.

“The objection was unfair because already a number of Pakistani, Indian and English movies with sexual content are being exhibited at cinemas and cable networks throughout the country,” he said. He further confessed that it is not a family film. “Who likes to watch a family film in our dingy cinema houses? This is an era of love, romance, sex and action all packaged as one,” he explained.

The story of Aik Gunahoon Ka Shehr revolves round a young man (Ahad Butt) fascinated by city life and the thrills it has to offer. Once there, unemployment eventually leads him to join a gang of blackmailers involved in sex crimes, in turn leading to his ruin. The best part of the film is its music composed by Humaira Arshad and Awais Malik. Here’s hoping that the musicians signal healthy changes in film music too.

One Two Ka One (Urdu)
Cast: Reema, Saima, Moammar Rana, Aman ullah
Director: Ronaq Ali

They say laughter is the best medicine and in the past, comedy was an inevitable part of almost every Pakistani film. Lollywood has produced some marvellous comedians in the past such as Munawwar Zarif, Lehri, Rangeela, Nanna, Zulfi, etc, and their comic takes have boosted the box-office appeal of films such as Rangeela Aur Munawwar Zarif, Hansde Aao Hansde Jao, etc. The sole aim in doing so was to provide viewers some respite from the drudgery of their problems and anxieties. When social/romantic films ceased to be produced, refined comedy began to vanish and eventually died an obscure death.

However, in One Two Ka One, there is a plethora of comic scenes that make one laugh along with enjoying a good story line. According to its producer, Syed Aamir Raza, viewers will enjoy the witty one-liners of all the major characters. At a time when action films have failed to make any headway, it is necessary to bring something new to refresh people’s minds. Shaan was initially given the title role but later it was given to Moammar Rana. “Shaan caused us some amount of concern with his busy schedule so we replaced him with Moammar,” said Raza. “Anybody who watches One Two Ka One will bring his family too.”

A musician by profession, Ronaq landed the assignment after his previous successful venture, Nahin Abhi Nahin. The film has one song by Naseebo Lal and two by Saira Naseem and Saima Jahan each.

Zameen Ke Khuda
Cast: Shaan, Moammar Rana, Saima, Babrak Shah
Director: Masood Butt

According to the writer of this film, the supreme authority of man’s action is God. Unfortunately, man forgot His decree and power and assumed that he can harvest the desired result by resorting to trickery. Bureaucrats, jagirdars/waderas and politicians are brought into particular focus here and how they forget their assigned roles and become super-men (zameen ke khuda) and usurpers of human rights.

Shaan plays a police officer along with Babrak Shah while Saima enacts a die-hard journalist. The film is double version, picturised both in Urdu and Punjabi amid fears that the beauty of the lyrics may be compromised when the songs are rendered by Naseebo Lal for its Punjabi version.

Zameen Ke Khuda is shot locally in the studios while its producer, Sheikh Akram, deserve kudos for refraining from the likes of Gujjar-Jatt type films. Moreover, some 20 films are to his credit and the ratio of their success is said to be a whopping 60 per cent. One can only hope that Zameen Ke Khuda would be an entirely different fare from co-releases Pappu Gujjar and Piyo Badmashan Da this festive season.

Pakistani Film Festival

PEHLEE DHARKAN (FIRST HEARTBEAT)

Pehlee Dharkan is the first ever Pakistani Film Festival outside Pakistan and in itself is an important means of celebrating and interacting with Pakistani films, past and present. The festival provides a highly accessible medium through which people from both Minority and Majority Ethnic communities can become involved in the arts and creative industries, both as audience members and as practitioners. Furthermore, Heer Productions sees Pehlee Dharkan as part of a continuing process aimed at facilitating Pakistani and Scottish film-makers to make contact with one another, to work together through workshops, training and ultimately perhaps through co-productions.

The festival presents a selection of films from the following categories:

Cutting Edge

‘New Wave' from Pakistan and work by independent filmmakers includes Sarmed Sehbai and emerging talent such as Adnan Malik, Hasan Zaidi, Sharmeen Obaid, Bilal Minto and Faisal Rehman.

Films by British South Asian Diaspora

The festival aims to provide a platform for British Asian filmmakers from professional backgrounds as well as community films. These include films ‘Elephant Boy' by Rene Mohandas & Durdana Shaikh and ‘Shahbangra Sandra from Pakistan' by Spirit Aid.

Work of Pakistani Women Directors

As with Iran , many of the new wave of Pakistani directors are women. This is of particular relevance in a patriarchal society where the Film Censor Board has a powerful role. Many of these directors - male and female - are tackling controversial issues as well as producing entertainment. Renowned female directors include Sangeeta whose ‘ Muthai Bhar Chawal ' was one of the rare arthouse films made in Pakistan, and Samina Peerzada who made ‘ Inteha ' which dealt with the controversial topic of rape within marriage. Other acclaimed female directors include Mahreen Jabbar, Sabiha Sumar, Maheen Zia & Sharmeen Obaid.

Short Films and Documentaries on Environmental and Health issues in Pakistan

Film and TV should be an intrinsic part of civil society and as such, must remain engaged and informative if it is to survive, develop and prosper as a valid and respected medium of dialogue and dissent in the cultural, economic, political and infrastructural contexts of Pakistan and the wider world. This section includes documentaries by Sheema Kermani and Maheen Zia.

Retrospective Selection of Classic Pakistani Films

The film industry in South Asia is now over a hundred years old. Prior to the Partition of India in 1947, the industry largely was based between Bombay and Lahore . In Lahore , many superb classic films were produced, two of these, Choorian and Intezar , were screened at the Glasgow Pakistan Film Festival 2005.
