Two flyovers in Peshawar approved

Bureau Report

June 22, 2010
PESHAWAR, June 21 The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has approved construction of flyovers at Gulbahar and Rahman Baba Chowk, which will cost more than Rs1 billion.

The projects were approved at a meeting held here on Monday under Chief Minister Ameer Haider Khan Hoti, says a handout. Provincial Senior Minister Bashir Ahmed Bilour and officials concerned attended the meeting.

The chief minister said he was aware of traffic problems in Peshawar and added that shortage resources would not hinder efforts to address the issues.

“Both the projects are important and useful from beautification and development perspectives. Completion of the projects will fulfil a longstanding demand of the people,” he said.

He said people`s problems and hindrance in traffic flow should be considered during construction of the flyovers. He asked Bashir Bilour to consult other departments on the projects in order to initiate work on the projects as soon as possible.

He said the flyovers would help in smooth flow of traffic on the GT Road and other highways.

The meeting was told that the Gulbahar flyover would be completed in one and a half years and the Rahman Baba Square flyover would take more than two years to complete.

The Gulbahar flyover will cost Rs250 million and the Rahman Baba Square flyover over Rs770 million.

Meanwhile, the chief minister has taken notice of increase in the price of sugar.

He directed the food secretary for necessary action and asked him to submit him a report in this connection.

Its the worst planned flyover I have ever seen!

Its on either side of the GT Road and engulfs the main track and has very low clearance for higher trucks. The crossing road also gets elevated 2-lane slip roads constricting the main track further. Considering that this 4-5 lane double track gets congested to the point of stagnation, constricting the main track to 2 lanes on either side seems wrong.
