Salam,

Yes Techno, this indeed is a nice development. Urban mass-transit is better for the metros like that of Faisalabad... Cheap and Clean transportation.

I hope the trains are electric though. I hate diesel (or worse, coal) trains.

Peace.

GCU Faisalabad: on the way to top

FAISALABAD: Government College University Faisalabad is on a continuous journey of progress and success and is ready to touch the top of excellence.

Its journey started in 1897 when a municipal middle school was setup in the building of the present Government College for Woman Karkhana Bazaar, Faisalabad. In September 1905, it was upgraded to a high school level. In 1915, Punjab government took over its management and it was shifted to the present building. In May 1924, it was upgraded to an intermediate college level and in October 1933, it was upgraded to a degree college level. In 1963, postgraduate classes were started here and on July 1, 1990, the provincial government declared it as an autonomous institution.

The day of October 23, 2002 is a milestone in the history of Faisalabad when Punjab Governor Lt-Gen Khalid Maqbool (retired), an old student of this institution, elevated status of the college to that of a university.

Renowned educationist, Dr Asif Iqbal Khan, author of 100 research articles and three books, was appointed its first vice chancellor.

Previously, the government college only offered postgraduate courses in seven disciplines but after attaining the status of a university, 23 new departments and nine MPhil courses leading to PhD programmes were introduced.

GCU Faisalabad has an edge over other varsities in Pakistan of having 50 PhDs among its teaching staff and in a recent report, Higher Education Commission has termed the varsity a university of bright future.

A job placement and consultancy centre is also working at the GCU and links with industry had also been established while the institution has held technology and industrial exhibitions in 2003, 2004 and 2005.

Also, curricula of 35 postgraduate programmes has been altered to meet current requirements and examination system here has been changed to term semester and semester system from annual and bi annual system and entry test has been made compulsory for getting admission in the university.

Moreover, Board of Revenue Punjab has allotted 401 acres of land to the university for construction of a new campus.

Recently, Governor Khalid Maqbool visited the GCU Faisalabad and expressed pleasure over the number of PhD faculty members and on setting up of new departments there. The governor lauded efforts of VC Dr Asif Iqbal Khan in this regard.

A first international conference on chemistry will be held at the varsity from November 1 to November 3 in which scientists and researchers from all over the world will participate.

The GCU specially emphasises on capacity building and strengthening of teaching abilities in its teachers and HEC has set up a training and resource centre offering one-month training workshop for the varsity teachers. The varsity is also offering 19 new four-year BA and BS programmes like chemistry, zoology, environmental science, physics, botany, bio informatics, mathematics, statistics, economics, home economics, fine arts, education, geography, banking and finance , information technology, business administration, telecom engineering , English literature and Islamiat.

Indeed, focus of the GCU is higher education, research and production of knowledge and this budding seat of learning can be judged on basis of quality and excellence of its faculty and students.

And, resolve of the varsity is to also build personalities of those who attend this institution and soon it will be ranked among the top, perhaps the topmost, universities of the country.

Concrete steps being taken to streamline traffic in Faisalabad city

City dist nazim says skill development centres to be set up to meet demand for skilled workers

Our Correspondent

FAISALABAD: With a view to streamlining the traffic flow in the fast growing Khurrianwal industrial area, Khurrainwala Chowk will be widened and the heavy traffic will be given an alternative route in the form of a new road linking the Industrial area with the bypass road.

This decision was taken at a meeting presided over by City District Nazim Rana Zahid Tauseef which was attended among others by Khurrianwala Industrial Estate President Mian Saeed, Area CCB Chairman Rana Ameen, EDO (Community Development) Chaudhry Shabbeer Ahmad and representatives of industries Thursday.

City District Nazim Rana Zahid Tauseef said he was determined to make Faisalabad a district having the best possible facilities and opportunities. This scheme will not only help reduce the traffic mess in the area but provide an alternative route to the industrial area. The transportation of goods without unnecessary hindrances or delays would also be possible, he added. He further said completion of the said scheme would be ensured within the least possible time.

Giving details, Rana Zahid Tauseef said the scheme would cost about Rs 13 million under Khurrianwala Chowk and the Sem Nullah Pull would be broadened besides constructing a new link road with proper shoulders from the Industrial Area to the bypass road. A latest traffic signal would also be installed at Khurrianwala Chowk for streamlining the flow of traffic there.

The government will provide 80 per cent funding for the scheme scheduled to be executed under the CCB programme while the industries and residents of the area will contribute 20% as their share towards the scheme.

Rana Zahid Tauseef directed the district officer (roads) present at the meeting to provide all possible technical assistance to the CCB and introduce some well-reputed contractors so that the completion of the scheme with quality material within least possible time could be ensured.

Rana Zahid said that under the second phase the Industrial Area Bypass Link Road would be developed as a two-lane dual-carriage way. He directed the district officer (roads) to complete the initial study and estimate work for the phase II so that necessary funds for the project could be arranged.

The city district nazim, appreciating the cooperation extended by the area industrialists, said that coming forward for collective welfare and development was an appreciable act. "The Faisalabad industrialists are known all over the country for their welfare work and have a repute of surpassing others in the field of collective benefit, welfare and development," he said and added the district government appreciated their nice gesture and would extend its cooperation for providing a peaceful, conducive & harmonious industrial environment to them for ensuring unhindered development of the district.]

Meanwhile, City District Nazim Rana Zahid Tauseef said skill development centres would be opened throughout the district with the cooperation and assistance of industrialists for meeting their demand for skilled workers and in turn providing respectable employment opportunities to the people.

He was talking to a delegation of Khurrianwala Industrial Area Thursday at the local circuit house. He said the industrial development and growth in Faisalabad had such an unprecedented pace that the demand for skilled workers was not being met. "Resultantly, we were constrained to hire skilled workforce from other neighboring countries, Sri Lanka, being on top in meeting the demand of local industry for trained workers.

The city district nazim said, "By raising the said skill development centres, we will not only be in a position to meet this demand of local industry but we will also be able to provide our brethren with respectable living, reducing unemployment and poverty.

Rana Zahid Tausif said the district government was focusing its attention towards the rural areas for setting up these professional training centres to create job opportunities and bring prosperity there. Such centres would be set up in Satiana, Jaranwala, Tandilianwala and other less developed areas of the district, he said.

Rana said that besides setting up skilled development centres with the assistance of industrialists, new trades were also being introduced in the Tevta institutions in accordance with the requirements of the local industry. He told the participants of the meeting that he had also requested Punjab Governor Khalid Maqbool to use his good offices for increasing the number of seats in different trade development courses from 70 to 700 for ensuring that the demands of the local industry had been met.

He urged the industrialists to come forward for developing skill development centres and assured them of all-out Government assistance in this regard. The government would provide 80% amount from the CCB funds for such schemes if they (industrialists) only contributed 20% as their share. He directed the EDO (Community Development) to guide and assist all interested persons in this regard and ensure approval of such schemes with the least possible time.

FCCI prepares road map to solve industrial problems

KHALID ABBAS SAIF

FAISALABAD (October 15 2006): The Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FCCI) has chalked out a road map to resolve the industrial, business and social problems during 2006-07.

Talking to newsmen, FCCI President Muhammad Ayub Sabir Chugtai underlined the importance of Faisalabad in national economy and said that it was contributing 67 percent towards textile exports. "It is the second biggest revenue generating city but infrastructure-wise it was not getting due importance", he said.

He said that FCCI has chalked out a calendar for the next year to tackle various issues systematically by establishing close relations with the local, provincial and federal government departments concerned. He asked the media persons to bring to his notice the problems confronted by various segments, so that these could be tackled effectively.

He said that the future of four sectors, including textile, was bright in Pakistan. He appreciated the economic polices of Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz and said that zero rating of the textile sector was one of the most daring steps taken by his government.

He said that government has also given the facility of 5 percent R&D to textile exporters. However, exporters were facing some problems due to increase in cost of production. He said that the exporters had doubled their production capacity to avail the benefits of quota-free regime under WTO. However, oil prices increased the cost of production creating problems for textile exporters.

He said that now as the oil prices are falling and textile sector would soon come out of the inflationary spell. He said that one of the biggest industrial estates of Pakistan was being developed along M-3 on 4500 acres land. The existing units present in congested residential areas would be shifted to this estate in addition to the establishment of new industrial units.

He said that FCCI has also been negotiating with Fesco officials to overcome load shedding. In this connection private power generators would give their surplus production to Fesco, he said, and added that modalities in this regard were being finalised with the officials concerned.

FDP handles record number of containers

FAISALABAD: The Faisalabad Dry Port (FDP) handled a record number of import and export containers valuing Rs90 billion during the calendar year 2006.

Chairman Faisalabad Dry Port Trust Chaudhry Muhammad Siddique said here on Wednesday the port handled 32,457 export containers valuing Rs65 billion from January 1 to December 31, 2006.

The FDP had handled 30,293 containers during 2005, showing 2,164 more containers were handled compared to last year, he said.

In December 2005, the FDP had handled 2,764 containers while in December 2006 3,069 containers were handled, an increase of 305 containers in one month.

He said it was due to the fact that Pakistan Railways provided 14 special cargo trains during the last two weeks of December for expeditious transportation of export containers from Faisalabad to Karachi ports.

Chairman FDPT claimed a record 60 per cent exports from Faisalabad were routed through the FDP while only 40 per cent exports were made direct through Karachi during the month of December.

About import, he said it witnessed a decrease of 466 containers during 2006 compared to 2005. He said the FDP handled 7,341 import containers valuing Rs25 billion during 2006 compared to 7,807 containers in the previous year. He attributed this decrease to decline in the import of textile machinery during 2006.

Salam,

Unbelieveable as it may sound, Faisalabad actually looks like a more planned city than most cities in Pakistan on Google Earth. I don't know if that is true in reality on ground, but from the skys, it looks like a promising metro.

Peace.

In the past there was a factory named KOHINOORMILL on the jaranwala road. Its was far away from the Faisalabad city but as the time passed the city expands more and then the factory came into the city.About 10 years ago in 2000 the factory owner decided to shift the factory away from the city then they demolished the factory and sold all the land. Now the plots on the main side facing the jaranwala road were the expensive one so they sold them all now many towers and plazas are buildinh up there like MEDIACOM TRADE CITY,DOBURJ,CENTER POINT,KOHINOOR ONE ETC.Now its is becoming the skyline of FAISALABAD.
