A BASE jumper who leapt off Pakistan's tallest building had a lucky escape after his parachute malfunctioned in high winds.
Russian man Dulri Ruzov underestimated the strength of the wind when he plunged from the rooftop of the 29-storey
MCB Building in Karachi yesterday.
A gust took hold of the Russian’s parachute as soon as it was deployed and flung the daredevil into the side of the building, causing him to plummet to the ground.
But Ruzov's parachute became snagged on the wires of an adjacent building and his descent was brought to an abrupt halt just metres from the ground.
Crowds at street level watched on stunned as Ruzov dangled above.
The daredevil, who had attempted the jump to promote peace in Pakistan, then waited nervously as authorities figured out a way to pull him back to safety.
"Unfortunately, I am lightweight and the winds were very strong today so I was not successful but I hope I have achieved my task of passing on the message of peace to people of Pakistan," he was later quoted as saying by the Press Trust of India.
Ruzov was said to be in relatively high spirits after the ordeal.
The notoriously dangerous sport of BASE jumping was responsible for the death of a 30-year-old man in the NSW Blue Mountains at the weekend.
