Al Ghurair Giga brings global expertise for modern living
Amin hopes more investments after Goldcrest DHA;
Choksy says engineered buildings are secure against earthquake

Interview/Mahmood Hussain

Islamabad—It was a nice experience to interact with a galaxy of people of international repute connected with the most modern and expensive housing project of the country, the Goldcrest DHA Islamabad. Haji Amin Pardesi, the Chief Executive Officer of the Al Ghurair Giga was here the other day along with about a dozen world fame experts to carry forward their maiden project in Defense Housing Authority (DHA), Phase 11, Zone 5.

During an exclusive interview with Pakistan Observer the whole team spoke at length about the prospects of the housing industry in the country. The Chief Executive Officer of the UAE based Al Ghurair Giga (Pakistan) Private Limited said they are the fastest growing real estate developers in the Persian Gulf. Our winning formula is the team of highly qualified professionals in the field of architecture, interior design, construction and management. We bring experience of numerous landmark projects such as 23-Marina-90 story Residential Tower, Goldcrest Executive Tower and Liberty House.

Haji Amin Pardesi was optimistic that with the successful launch of Goldcrest DHA Islamabad, more and more foreign investors will be attracted in the field of housing and construction in Pakistan especially in the federal capital. Giving details of the Islamabad project he said it would comprise 26 buildings including 17 high rise towers. The rest 9 will comprise 7-9 floors only. The total number of apartments in these buildings is expected to be 3700. These will be spread over an area of 320 Kanals or 41 Acres
.

Haji Amin said all modern day international level amenities are being made available in the scheme. That includes mosques, schools, hospitals, community center, underground parking, swimming pools, lake, Public Park and high speed internet and telecommunication facilities. Yousuf Choksy who is dealing with the marketing gave the assurance that good quality engineered buildings are secure against quake. He said the finance being injected by Al Ghurair Giga in Pakistan is destined to create lot of economic activity and employment opportunities.

The technical and engineering expertise for the Goldcrest DHA Islamabad is being provided by WS Atkins & Partners Overseas based in Dubai, the Halcrow registered in England and Currie and Brown and Architects of Karachi. Dr. Shapour Mehrkar-Asl represented Atkins at the interview while George Grant spoke for Currie & Bown and Tariq Hasan represented the Architects. Mushtaq H. Dawood representing Mushtaq & Bilal, Consulting Engineers was also present on the occasion.

These housing and building experts of world repute gave the assurance to the people of Pakistan and to the Islamabadiites in particular that natural disasters like earthquakes can cause no substantial damage to high rise buildings as long as they are built on prescribed specifications.

They also cleared out of danger all high rise buildings that had sustained and withstood the October 8, 2005 earthquake in our part of the world. They said cities like Tokyo and Sanfransisco are located in the earth prone zone and yet they had plenty of high-rise buildings. To a question they made it clear that buildings that collapse during an earthquake are those which are not properly engineered. They are badly detailed buildings, they insisted.

In the earthquake prone zone however it is suggested that earthquake engineering be applied in the construction work. They again assured that buildings in Islamabad, which are made with engineering specifications, are safe to live. It’s good that they had sustained the test of October 8, 2005 earthquake.

When asked to comment about Islamabad as a whole, they said it appears as if the city was planned for car owners only. Interest of pedestrians had probably been overlooked. Question however strikes to one’s mind what will happen in the next 20 years or so when the length and breadth of the city will further be stretched? Never mind, at that time the dwellers of the capital will be able to afford helicopters to move from one end of the Blue Area to another, one of the experts smiled and added.

Salam,

Great updates. Shows that the filling work is going on smoothly. One question though: Are all the building gonna be built simultaneously like the one in Karachi? If so, this could mean that Islamabad would have 20 towers (of 20-36 stories each) in a short period of time!

Peace.
